WAITING FOR THE TRAIN
(Oils)
Inspiration:
This is my memory of New Street Station, Birmingham UK in the early 1960s, prior to its demolition in 1965.
I remember as a child standing and waiting on Platform 10 (depicted here) with my parents, for the train to arrive.
It was a draughty cold wait and the train was late.
This image was exhibited at the Leamington and Warwick Model Railway Society Exhibition during 2009 at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire UK.
The painting provoked a strong emotional reaction from the public.
Many said how it brought back fond memories of waiting on the platform with its beautiful arched roof dating back to 1884,
and that it should never have been demolished.
A few people remembered how they witnessed the destruction of the station with a ball and chain and how it was a heart breaking experience for them.
How life was at a slower pace then, with the Railway Staff having time for a chat with their hands in their pockets,
when there were train delays.
I remember this as a typical scene at the time.
The image depicts a Jubilee Class patiently waiting on the inner track to be assigned to a passenger train.
