Steam Railway Gallery

The beauty of Britain’s Railways, Canals and period road Vehicles.

Canals

I discovered canals through the Jane Powell Art Studio based in Kenilworth where I was a Resident Artist. They prompted me to go and walk along the towpaths of the Midland canal network and find inspiration to create a portfolio of canal scenes ready for an art exhibition at their Gallery in 2001. The Grand Union canal is the nearest canal to where I live and at Radford Semele I found my first inspiration. I took many photographs of Offchurch Viaduct there and then returning to my studio I created several sketches, which I later developed into oil paintings. I chose to use cargo narrowboats in my images, rather than modern holiday narrowboats to illustrate a time period. The scenes were quite beautiful and it was a joy and delight to be there. with the occasional sound of birdsong in the air, interrupted by the whine of a passing narrowboat. There are many holiday narrowboats in use along the canal and many were moored. I found a feeling of peace, tranquility and a TIMELESS BEAUTY as I walked along the canal. Steel hull narrowboats are built at Kate Boats in Warwickshire. Visit their site at https://www.kateboats.co.uk/ ALL IMAGES ARE ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS AND FOR SALE OR SOLD WHERE INDICATED. PRINTS ARE FOR SALE ON ALL IMAGES. SIZE 16IN X 12IN

Railways Canals and Road Vehicles

Romance of Steam

I fell in love with Steam Railways after hearing Reginald Gardner's wonderful audio recording entitled TRAINS. (hear it by selecting "Duchess in Defiance" from exhibition page). It was played on Children's Favourites on Saturday mornings during my childhood in the 1960s. What I heard was Reginald mimicking what I would describe as "a living railway", I later went to see these living things at Saltley Engine Sheds in East Birmingham with a school friend whose father was an engine driver. I noticed how looking at a steam locomotive fully in steam was like a living thing . The 5 elements of the earth captured in a magnificent piece of mechanical engineering. In other words like earth, fire, air and water and space, in a setting of Light, Darkness and Spirit These elements I have tried to capture in my compositions below. ALL IMAGES ARE ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS AND ARE FOR SALE OR SOLD AS INDICATED. SOME WERE COMMISSIONED PIECES. PRINTS ARE FOR SALE ON ALL IMAGES. SIZES 16IN X 12IN

Steam Locomotives in monochrome oils.

I fell in love with Steam Locomotives from an early age, especially with the larger pacific type locomotives. They have a grace and grandeur and a beauty of their own exemplified by the external motion of their valve gear, connecting rods and driving wheels and are like a living thing as they expel their steam and smoke. My first colour paintings of trains was inspired by the artist of the century, namely Terence Cuneo. A prolific artist, who worked in various genre, but his main focus was steam railways. See his video by selecting "Duchess visits Leamington" and "Sir Nigel Gresley visits Leamington" below Kevin Alun Parrish GRA ALL IMAGES ARE ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS AND ARE FOR SALE OR SOLD AS INDICATED. PRINTS ARE AVAILABLE ON ALL IMAGES. SIZES 16IN X 12IN
